Fad Diets: A mouse trap

In past years, I have seen people going to crazy lengths to lose weight. They will do every hack that promises a quick weight loss but to work hard towards fitness and health.

What is a fad diets?

It’s a low calorie diet for a quick weight loss, which is unhealthy and causes disturbance in the body functions.

Why is it popular??

It promises you a quick weight loss. For example, lose 7 kgs in 7 days or eat every thing for only few hours and stay hungry for the rest or juice diets and the list goes on.

The first time I fell in this trap was when I was 18. I have been obese all my childhood, so I was thirsting to lose weight. So I tried my hand on GM Diet (fad Diet) and I lost  7-8 kgs in a fortnight. I was so happy. However, little did I know my happiness was only temporary. Not only did I gained the lost weight back and gained a few more. When I started the diet, I was 110 kgs and after gaining the lost weight and some more I was 115 kgs. So by now I should have learnt my lesson right. Unfortunately I didn’t.

After a few years, I got the news of my cousin’s wedding. I so wanted to look good, so I again tried my hand on a different kind of fax diets this time thinking it will be different. It was the KETO DIET this time. I am a vegetarian, so it was even more restrictive for me. For almost a month I ate 70%fat, 20% protein and remainder were carbs. This time as well I did lost weight but I lost few more things. So I lost 2-3 kgs along with my hair, the glow of my skin and I gained acnes on my body.

Cons of Fad Diets

These are some after effects that can occur after the shortcut you take to lose weight :-

Hair and muscle loss: The nutritional deficiencies caused by fad diets will result in hair and muscle loss. Protein helps adds luster and smoothness to hair. Muscle loss is another effect of fad diets, and when the diet is low in calories, the body looks at other sources to get energy. One of the ways to get energy is by digesting muscles, which is quite detrimental to weight loss as muscles help to burn calories even when we are at rest.

Weight gain: These kind of crash diet looks tempting as they claim that they can help you burn some calories and with minimal efforts. Going on a fad diet would definitely help you lose weight in a matter of days because you are on a restricted diet. The moment you put an end to your normal diet, you go back to unhealthy eating habits. So as experts recommend, do not follow any weight loss diet and exercise regularly to stay fit and healthy.

Alter metabolism: Just because you are restricted to follow a particular diet, it is possible that your natural metabolism may get disrupted. It’s our body’s natural ability to give us indicators about our eating pattern like when to eat and when we are full. The moment we go against the natural pattern, we may face a negative impact on our metabolism and these effects may last longer even after dieting.

Nutritional deficiencies: Depriving oneself of proper nutrition is always harmful to the body. Vitamins, minerals, and nutrients are required for the proper functioning of the body. When we stay on a fad diet for long, our hair starts falling, the nails become brittle, skin starts to lose its shine and we even get dark circles under the eyes. All these effects are caused due to lack of nutrition in the body.

So if losing weight ever crosses your mind please know that it’s like a mouse trap you are falling for. The only way we can lose weight is calories deficit and consistency.
