Thinking for yourself and making your own decisions can be frightening. Letting go of other people’s expectations can leave you feeling empty for a time and yet seeing yourself as an independent adult who can stand up for your own choices frees you to accept yourself as you are.
No offence to anyone, but its high time some people should understand that their kids or their spouse are not their property. They are humans as well, who has equal right to decide for themselves (good or bad).
No offence to these people, kids or spouses who got to understand that its high time they need to stand up for themselves. You are a human not a carpet that someone else can walk all over you. If you don’t speak up for yourself at the right time, you can’t blame someone else for your life’s misery.
My heart aches when I see some of these cases around me and I know its possible to stand up for yourself. It can be difficult the first time, because you feel you owe your life to your spouse or parents and its disrespectful to not obey to their command. However, you got it all wrong.
As much as I love my parents and am thankful to them for this amazing life, I know there is something called right and wrong. I cannot be happy forever if I do something just for the heck of it.
For example: I could be brilliant at painting however my parents want me to pursue MBBS. If I do whatever they want, I am doing injustice with them, their money, their hopes and my aspirations. Hence, please stand up for yourself. If you haven’t done it in the past, start now. I wish there could be a “how to guide“ for standing up for yourself.
All I know is it requires two things: 1. Courage 2. Timing
You need to gather the courage to stand up for yourself, at the right time.
- You need to fight your own battle.
- Stop taking yourself and your life for granted.
If you are thinking that one day you will do all this, please understand this that one day might never come.
You need to make that “ONE DAY” today.
When you stand for something, you’ve got to stand for it all the way, not half way.
Powerful Ways to Stand Up for Yourself in Any Situation
- Be clear. Try to ask for what you want openly and in a straight-forward manner, and state your feelings clearly without directly or indirectly demeaning the other person.
- Practice being transparent and authentic.
- Take small but powerful steps.
- Figure out what’s really bothering you.
- Clarify first, without attacking.
- Practice makes you perfect.
- Speak up for your self firmly, avoid accusing.
It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.
