What Is Basal Metabolic Rate?


BMRBasal metabolic rate is the amount of energy per unit of time that a person needs to keep the body functioning at rest. Some of those processes are breathing, blood circulation, controlling body temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles. Basal metabolic rate affects the rate that a person burns calories and ultimately whether that individual maintains, gains, or loses weight.

BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

BMI cannot be fully accurate because it is a measure of excess body weight, rather than excess body fat. For instance, for someone who lifts weight in the gym will have the same weight but will have less of body fat. Same goes for athletes and bodybuilders.

How to estimate your BMR :
One popular way to estimate BMR is through the Harris-Benedict formula, which takes into account weight, height, age, and gender.

Women:

BMR = 655 + (9.6 × weight in kg) + (1.8 × height in cm) – (4.7 × age in years)

Men:

BMR = 66 + (13.7 × weight in kg) + (5 × height in cm) – (6.8 × age in years)

However, a good health cannot be measured by just your weight. Health is much more than a mere number on the weighing scale. According to WHO, A good health define as,“it is a state of complete physical ,mental and social well-bring and not merely your weight.
